Recluidos/Secluded

That day was different. Not the silence they were used to live in. The group ate their portions excited, concentrated in the two men’s heated argument.

We have to stay here where we are safe, alive. There is nothing we can do against it - said one of them, his face grim, while giving a good account of that day’s crust of bread.

What are you saying? Are you out of your mind? I refuse to spend my whole existence in this place, in this prison. Cause that’s what it is –replied the youngest one.

But we don't know what's past these walls! What if they take us for traitors and kill us as an example? What if it's true, all they have said? We would be dead in barely a few weeks! –yelled the first, angry.

Do you really think it is worthy to spend all this time here, locked up?

We ‘ain't’ locked up man! We are saving our lives inside here.

Lives? –he stared at him severely, piercing through him with his almost transparent eyes.

                    That's what I said, yes...

Bread crumbs fell from the corners of his mouth.

Have you even thought for a second what you are saying? You are saying that here we can preserve our lives, we can 'not be dead', right? You are calling this imperative way of existing a 'life'?! –he shouted.

                    What if I'm...

You fool. Life is not something that easy. Life is a right of ours, for sure. But here me out, rights have to be won. –he raised his voice, turning to the others, who looked at him confused, many of them almost with a hint of compassion.

If we stay here, just watching as time goes by, we'll never have a 'life'. For me, a life is not some period of time, is not a scientific event, it's not even a thing. Life for me is what we do. When we are running away, trying to find a better place, we are having a life. When we are trying to make a difference, we are having a life –he went on, not caring at all about his cellmates’ scepticism.

Eating, breathing, sleeping, those things are obviously necessary, but at the end of the day, they remain just means for a life. And I rather try to have a real life, knowing that I might die for it, than stay here with all those means, but unable to really live.

The older, still covered in dirt and with a lifted eyebrow, kept looking at him intensely.

Then what should we do? You are talking big and all that but it is not so simple... We just have ONE life, risking it this easily...!

See, that's where you are wrong –he lamented. Right now, for me, we have no life at all. This existence of ours, begging for a loaf of hard bread, secluded in cells like pariahs, deprived of the sunlight, cannot be called a life.

(Sorry for the English, did my best)
